I pledge to defend the rights and freedoms afforded to us by the 14th Amendment.
As an elected official, I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and to protect the rights and freedoms of all people in this country.
The 14th Amendment is the bedrock of our multiracial democracy — where no matter your race, background, or zip code, you have the same rights as anyone else. It guarantees that anyone born in this country has the full rights of citizenship, that every person has the right to due process, and that the law must protect us all equally. These principles are a proud reminder of the promise we carry as a nation and the example we aim to set for democracies around the world.
For generations, everyday people have fought to make America live up to its promise of freedom and equality. That struggle continues today. We are living in an unprecedented moment of danger for our country that threatens our most fundamental rights and freedoms as Americans like never before. Recent events unfolding before us — executive orders threatening to end birthright citizenship, state-level attacks undermining voting rights for Black Americans, and cruel immigration enforcement that strips people of due process — show how quickly the protections guaranteed by the 14th Amendment can be eroded.
The freedom to speak our minds, to walk down the street without fear of being arrested for who we are or what we believe, to enjoy the same treatment under the law as every other American, and to be treated fairly by our leaders, whether or not we voted for them. That is what’s at stake. If we care about America, we have to take decisive action now.
As elected officials from across the country, serving at every level of government, we are coming together to defend the 14th Amendment and the vision of a nation where everyone belongs.
I commit to:
Defend and uphold the rights and protections guaranteed by the 14th Amendment;
Reject and oppose any legislation, executive action, or policy that seeks to dismantle or weaken those rights;
Protect birthright citizenship for every American;
Work to expand the full promise of equal protection and due process;
Stand with communities and social movements fighting to ensure that our democracy works for all of us, not just a powerful few.
